Tintagel

This is a unique and private hotel, built as a private residence in 1930 and situated in the heart of Colombo’s most elite neighbourhood, close to many embassies. Tintagel is housed in a stunning heritage building of national importance, once the family home of three of Sri Lanka’s political leaders, one of whom was Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the world’s first female Prime Minister.

The Experience

The Dining Room is a chic restaurant which offers some of Colombo’s finest international cuisine. The Courtyard, is a truly inviting al fresco restaurant with white armchairs under smart black umbrellas, which in the evening is transformed to a magical candle lit space. The hotel does not have a liquor license, but guests are encouraged to bring their own as the excellent staff is more than happy to chill a bottle of wine or mix an exotic cocktail.

Outside the hotel Colombo is a compact city which is easy to explore. Experience the colonial architecture by taking a trip to the Fort which was originally built by the Portuguese, within the ramparts are many interesting sights to see including St Peter’s Church, converted from what was the Dutch Governor’s banquet hall or the Old Dutch Hospital a complex which dates back to the 1600’s but is now home shops, cafés and restaurants, which provide a perfect place to watch the world go by. For those more interested in contemporary architecture, staff at Tintagel can arrange a tour of the creations of the most iconic of Sri Lanka’s architects; Geoffrey Bawa, who designed the Parliament building.
